About the Hertfordshire 11 Plus exam

The Hertfordshire 11+ uses GL Assessment verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning tests, administered in September. Some schools also have an English and maths component. Results and school preferences are submitted to Hertfordshire County Council, which allocates places based on score and distance from the school.

St Albans has strong demand for 11+ tutors given the concentration of selective schools in a small area. Families in Harpenden, St Albans, Welwyn and the surrounding villages often begin preparation in Year 4. The selective system in Hertfordshire is partially selective — schools set a qualifying score, and places are filled first by qualifying children in order of distance.

Registration deadline

Hertfordshire grammar schools require registration by July of Year 5. The Hertfordshire Assessment tests are held in September.

11 Plus in Hertfordshire: common questions

How does the Hertfordshire 11+ work?

Hertfordshire uses the GL Assessment format for its selective school entry tests. The test covers verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Children register via their primary school and sit the test in September of Year 6. Qualifying children can then list their preference for selective schools in the normal secondary school application.

Are the St Albans grammar schools very competitive?

Yes — St Albans Boys' and Girls' Schools, along with Beaumont School, attract many applications for limited selective places. Many applicants come from outside the immediate area. A specialist 11+ tutor can help ensure your child is well prepared for the specific GL Assessment format used across Hertfordshire.
