Classics tutors are among the hardest to find in the UK — and among the most valuable. Whether a student is learning Latin or Ancient Greek from scratch, preparing for the OCR GCSE, tackling A-Level Classical Civilisation or Greek/Latin A-Level, or preparing for Oxford and Cambridge classics admissions, the right specialist tutor can make an extraordinary difference to outcomes.
What does a Classics tutor help with?
- Latin GCSE (OCR). The most common Classics qualification in UK schools. Prose composition, prose translation, verse translation, grammar consolidation and literary analysis. Many students start Latin in Year 7 and find Year 9–10 the tipping point where a tutor helps most.
- Latin and Ancient Greek A-Level (OCR). Set texts in the original language (Virgil, Cicero, Livy; Homer, Thucydides, Plato), unprepared translation, prose composition into Latin, and literary commentary. Extremely content-heavy — a tutor who knows the set texts well is essential.
- Classical Civilisation A-Level (OCR). Studied in English translation. Covers Greek and Roman history, literature, art and society. Essays require structured argument and close engagement with primary sources. More accessible than Latin/Greek but still demanding at A-Level.
- Oxford and Cambridge Classics admissions. OLAT (Oxford Latin and Ancient Greek Aptitude Test), thinking skills assessments, written work requirements, interview preparation. Oxbridge Classics tutors with first-hand knowledge of the admissions process are in high demand.
- Common Entrance and prep school Latin. Many independent schools require Latin at CE, and prep school Latin preparation benefits from a specialist tutor who knows the grammar-focused approach.
Why is Classics difficult to self-teach?
Latin and Ancient Greek have a grammar complexity that is fundamentally different from modern languages — noun cases, complex verb morphology, and flexible word order all require systematic, structured teaching. Most students cannot progress efficiently without guided explanation of grammatical concepts. A tutor who can spot and correct systematic errors in translation or composition has a disproportionate impact on grades.
What to look for in a Classics tutor
- A degree-level knowledge of the subject. For Latin and Greek A-Level, a university-level classicist is usually necessary — not just a student who did well at A-Level.
- Specific familiarity with your set texts. OCR A-Level Latin and Greek have rotating set texts. A tutor who has taught Virgil Aeneid 4 or Homer's Iliad in the original is far more effective than one who hasn't.
- Exam board familiarity. OCR is essentially the only board offering Classical languages and Classical Civilisation. Your tutor should know OCR mark schemes and the specific demands of each paper.
- Oxbridge experience (if applicable). For admissions preparation, a tutor who has been through Oxbridge Classics admissions or coached students through it is highly valuable.
How much does a Classics tutor cost?
- Latin GCSE tutors: £38–£65 per hour
- Latin or Ancient Greek A-Level tutors: £45–£80 per hour
- Classical Civilisation A-Level tutors: £40–£70 per hour
- Oxbridge Classics preparation tutors: £65–£120 per hour
Classics tutors command a premium over most subjects because genuine specialists are rare — particularly for Ancient Greek, which is offered in a relatively small number of UK schools.
