Finding a Tutor

Film Studies tutors UK: A-Level, set films and where to find one

Film Studies A-Level requires precise analytical writing using film theory and technical vocabulary — not just description of what happens in the film. A guide to finding the right specialist tutor.

Film Studies A-Level is one of the most misunderstood subjects in sixth form. Students who choose it expecting an easy option frequently discover that the analytical writing required — close textual analysis of cinematography, mise-en-scène, sound and narrative — demands the same rigour as English Literature. A specialist Film Studies tutor helps students develop the technical language and analytical framework to score at the top of the mark scheme.

What Film Studies A-Level covers

  • Set film analysis. All boards require detailed study of a fixed set of films — including Hollywood mainstream, independent, documentary and non-English-language films. Students must analyse these films using film theory and production context.
  • Film language and terminology. Cinematography (shot types, angles, camera movement), mise-en-scène (lighting, costume, setting, performance), editing and sound must all be used precisely as analytical tools, not just named.
  • Film movements and contexts. All boards require knowledge of film history, movements (French New Wave, New Hollywood, Italian Neorealism) and how production context shapes meaning.
  • Practical production (NEA/coursework). Most boards include a practical production component — students create a short film or screenplay extract. This is often awarded more easily than the written exam but still requires significant technical understanding.

Film Studies exam boards

AQA and Eduqas (WJEC) are the main Film Studies A-Level boards. OCR also offers Film Studies. The set film lists differ significantly between boards — AQA and Eduqas use different films for their American and non-English-language components. Always confirm your board and set films before booking a tutor, as a tutor who knows the Eduqas list may not know AQA's set films.

What to look for in a Film Studies tutor

  • Film Studies, Media Studies or English degree. A tutor with academic training in film or media theory will teach analytical frameworks (apparatus theory, auteur theory, feminist film theory) that generalist tutors often lack.
  • Set film knowledge. This is the most critical check. Confirm the tutor knows your specific set films, not just film in general.
  • Essay marking against the mark scheme. Film Studies written components are marked on analytical quality, not content. A tutor who marks essays and annotates them specifically against exam criteria is essential.

How much does a Film Studies tutor cost?

  • GCSE Media/Film Studies tutors: £28–£50 per hour
  • A-Level Film Studies tutors: £35–£60 per hour
  • Online Film Studies tutoring: Very effective — essay review, clip analysis and theory discussion all work well remotely
