GCSE Science tutor UK: Combined and Triple Science guide

GCSE Science is broad, the grade boundaries are tight, and one weak topic can drag down a whole paper. Here's how to find a tutor who diagnoses and fixes the gaps.

GCSE Science is one of the most tutored subject areas in the UK. Whether a student is taking Combined Science (Double Award) or Triple Science (separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics), the content is broad, the exams are demanding, and the grade boundaries are tight. A tutor who can diagnose exactly which areas are dragging scores down and fix them efficiently is often the difference between a grade 4 and a grade 6.

Combined Science vs Triple Science

Most GCSE students take Combined Science, which covers all three sciences and awards two GCSEs (graded on a double award scale, e.g. 6-6 or 5-6). Triple Science students take separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, going into more depth in each.

Tutoring needs differ slightly:

  • Combined Science tutors typically cover all three sciences and focus on the core topics that appear in every paper — cells, forces, chemical reactions, electricity.
  • Triple Science tutors often specialise in one or two sciences and go into greater depth. A student doing triple science who struggles specifically with chemistry may benefit from a dedicated chemistry tutor rather than a general science tutor.

Exam board knowledge matters

AQA, Edexcel and OCR GCSE Science specifications differ in content and assessment style. AQA is the most widely sat. Required practicals — which appear in the written papers — vary between boards. Ask any prospective tutor which exam board they know well, and check it matches your child's school.

Topics students most often struggle with

In Combined Science:

  • Mole calculations and quantitative chemistry
  • Electricity — circuits, resistance, power equations
  • Forces and motion — velocity-time graphs, resultant forces
  • Cell biology — mitosis vs meiosis, transport mechanisms
  • Required practicals — understanding what was done and why

Most of these topics have a conceptual hurdle and a calculation component. A tutor who can address both — not just explain the concept but also build calculation confidence — makes a bigger difference than one who only covers one or the other.

What to look for in a GCSE Science tutor

  • Science degree or strong STEM background. For triple science especially, a subject specialist who has studied physics, chemistry or biology at degree level understands the content more deeply than a generalist.
  • All three sciences or one? Some tutors cover all three sciences well; others are specialists. Be clear about what your child needs before searching.
  • Practical knowledge. Required practicals in the written exam require understanding the methodology, not just the result. A tutor who has actually done these experiments can explain them more naturally.

GCSE Science tutor costs

  • Combined Science: £28–£50/hour for a tutor covering all three sciences
  • Individual sciences (Triple): £30–£55/hour for a specialist
  • Online science tutoring: Usually £5–£10 less per hour — diagrams, equations and past papers all work well on shared digital whiteboards

Frequently asked questions

Can one tutor cover all three sciences?

Some can — particularly those with a broad STEM background or Combined Science teaching experience. For triple science students targeting high grades in all three, subject specialists may be more effective than a generalist.

My child is only failing chemistry. Do they need a full science tutor?

No — a chemistry-specific tutor is the right choice in that case. Targeted tutoring on the specific weak subject is more efficient than covering all three.

How many sessions are needed to improve a GCSE Science grade?

For a one-grade jump (e.g. grade 4 to grade 5), eight to ten sessions of focused work on weak topics and exam technique is usually enough. For a two-grade improvement, allow a full term of weekly sessions.

My child is doing Combined Science but wants to study medicine. Should they switch to Triple?

Some medical schools prefer or require separate sciences. Check entry requirements for specific universities. If switching to triple, a tutor can help catch up on the additional content the separate science specs cover.

Does online science tutoring work for practicals questions?

Yes. Practicals in the written exam are about understanding — what equipment was used, what the variables were, how results were processed. A tutor can explain and test this effectively online without needing to be in the same room.
