Finding a Tutor

Geography tutors UK: GCSE, A-Level, NEA support and where to find one

Geography A-Level combines physical science and humanities essay writing in a way that catches many students off guard — and the NEA independent investigation is where students most often underperform.

Geography A-Level is one of the UK's most popular humanities subjects and one of the harder ones — the combination of physical geography (rivers, coasts, tectonics, glaciation), human geography (urban, development, globalisation), and an independent investigation fieldwork component catches many students off guard. The right tutor helps students understand geographical concepts deeply enough to apply them in unfamiliar exam scenarios.

What does a Geography tutor help with?

  • Physical Geography. Rivers and coasts, tectonic hazards and related case studies, glaciation, carbon cycles and water cycles. Case study recall and accurate diagram labelling are essential for exam marks.
  • Human Geography. Changing places, urban issues, population and migration, development and globalisation, resource security. Human Geography requires evaluative essay writing and critical engagement with case studies and data.
  • Independent Investigation (non-examined assessment). The NEA or coursework component — a fieldwork-based individual investigation — can contribute 20% of the final grade. A tutor helps with framing the research question, data collection methods, analysis and write-up structure.
  • GCSE Geography. AQA, Edexcel and OCR all assess similar content at GCSE: physical geography topics, human geography, issue evaluation papers, and fieldwork questions. Mark scheme technique and case study structure are key weaknesses.

Why do students struggle with Geography?

Geography A-Level requires simultaneous mastery of two very different subject types — the science of physical geography and the essay skills of human geography. Students who are strong at one type often underperform at the other. The mark scheme rewards specific case study details, precise geographical terminology, and structured analytical essays — skills that benefit enormously from a tutor who marks work against the actual mark scheme.

What to look for in a Geography tutor

  • Your specific exam board. AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC all have meaningfully different topic lists and case study requirements. A tutor who knows your board is significantly more effective.
  • NEA support experience. The independent investigation is the component where students most often underperform or fail to maximise marks. A tutor with coursework guidance experience is particularly valuable in Year 13.
  • Both physical and human geography. Some tutors specialise in one type. Confirm the tutor can cover both components of your course.

How much does a Geography tutor cost?

  • GCSE Geography tutors: £30–£52 per hour
  • A-Level Geography tutors: £38–£65 per hour
  • Tutors with Geography degrees: £42–£72 per hour
