Italian is offered at GCSE and A-Level across the UK and is the fourth most commonly studied modern language at A-Level after French, Spanish and German. It's also one of the fastest-growing choices for adult learners — Italy's culture, business ties and appeal for heritage learners of Italian origin make it consistently popular.

Who studies Italian with a tutor

  • GCSE Italian students. Many schools offer Italian as an alternative modern language. GCSE Italian tutors help with all four skills — speaking, listening, reading and writing — and with the grammar precision required for top grades.
  • A-Level Italian students. A-Level Italian is available at AQA and includes literary and film texts, independent research and translation both ways. Demand for A-Level Italian tutors is high given the small number of specialist teachers in most schools.
  • Heritage learners. British students of Italian origin often speak colloquial Italian at home but need academic language skills and formal grammar for GCSE or A-Level. Heritage learner tutoring is a growing segment.
  • Adult and conversational learners. Travel, property, business and cultural interest drive significant adult demand for conversational Italian tutors.

Italian exam boards

At GCSE, AQA and Edexcel offer Italian. AQA is more widely available. At A-Level, AQA Italian is the most common qualification — covering set texts (one literary, one film), an independent research project, translation both directions and a speaking exam.

What to look for in an Italian tutor

  • Native speaker or degree-level Italian. Italian pronunciation, verb forms and the subjunctive require a tutor who uses the language naturally.
  • A-Level text knowledge (if needed). AQA A-Level Italian requires knowledge of specific set texts. Confirm the tutor knows your set texts before booking.
  • Speaking practice. The speaking exam is high-stakes and often neglected. A tutor who conducts structured mock orals with feedback is essential for this component.

How much does an Italian tutor cost?

  • GCSE Italian tutors: £30–£55 per hour
  • A-Level Italian tutors: £40–£68 per hour
  • Adult / conversational Italian: £25–£50 per hour
  • Online Italian tutoring: Very effective — speaking and grammar sessions work well via video
