Finding a Tutor

Psychology tutors UK: GCSE and A-Level guide and how to find one

A-Level Psychology is one of England's most popular A-Levels — and one of the most underestimated. Research Methods is where most students lose marks. A specialist tutor who coaches evaluation technique and methodological thinking transforms grades.

A-Level Psychology is consistently one of the most popular A-Level choices in England — with around 80,000 students sitting it annually. Despite its popularity, many students underperform because they treat Psychology as a memory subject rather than a science that rewards critical evaluation and methodological understanding. Demand for Psychology tutors is high, particularly for students in Year 12–13 who are struggling with the research methods component or essay evaluation technique.

What does a Psychology tutor help with?

  • AQA Psychology content. AQA is by far the most popular Psychology specification. Core topics include Social Influence (Milgram, Asch), Memory (Working Memory Model, Eyewitness testimony), Attachment (Ainsworth, Bowlby), Psychopathology, Approaches (Biological, Cognitive, Behavioural, Psychodynamic, Humanistic), Biopsychology, Research Methods, and one optional topic. A tutor who knows the AQA specification in depth is invaluable.
  • Research Methods. Paper 2 of AQA A-Level Psychology includes a 48-mark Research Methods section that requires understanding of experimental design, sampling, statistical tests, data analysis and ethics. Many students find this the hardest paper — a tutor who can explain the logic of Research Methods systematically transforms performance here.
  • Evaluation and critical analysis. A-Level Psychology essays require students to evaluate evidence — discussing limitations, considering alternative explanations, and assessing methodological weaknesses. Students who describe rather than evaluate lose significant marks. A tutor who coaches evaluation structure is particularly valuable.
  • GCSE Psychology. AQA GCSE Psychology (introduced 2017) covers development, memory, perception, social influence, language, cognition, criminal psychology and psychological problems. It's more straightforward than A-Level but still requires methodological understanding.

How much does a Psychology tutor cost?

  • GCSE Psychology tutors: £28–£46 per hour
  • A-Level Psychology tutors: £35–£58 per hour
  • Tutors with Psychology degrees: £40–£68 per hour
