Religious Studies tutors UK: GCSE and A-Level guide and how to find one

Religious Studies is one of the most widely sat GCSE subjects — and one of the most underestimated. Many students lose marks because they describe rather than argue. An RS tutor who coaches evaluation technique and exam structure significantly raises grades.

Religious Studies (RS) — sometimes called Religious Education (RE) or Philosophy, Ethics and Religion — is one of the most widely sat GCSE subjects in England and Wales, and an increasingly popular A-Level choice. Many schools make GCSE RS compulsory as part of the core curriculum. Despite its ubiquity, many students underperform because they treat it as a memory subject rather than an argument-based one. RS tutors who teach essay technique and ethical reasoning — not just content recall — have the most impact.

What does a Religious Studies tutor help with?

  • GCSE RS exam technique. AQA GCSE Religious Studies (the most popular specification) uses 1-mark, 4-mark, 5-mark and 12-mark question formats. The 12-mark evaluation question — where students must present and evaluate arguments — is where most marks are lost. A tutor who coaches structure and counter-argument technique significantly raises grades.
  • Content: Christianity, Islam and thematic studies. AQA Paper 1 covers Christianity and a second religion (usually Islam or Judaism). Paper 2 covers four thematic studies (relationships, life and death, crime and punishment, peace and conflict). A tutor who knows the content deeply and can explain nuance makes revision systematic.
  • A-Level Philosophy and Ethics. A-Level RS includes Philosophy of Religion (arguments for God's existence, problem of evil, religious experience) and Ethics (Natural Law, Situation Ethics, Utilitarianism). These require genuinely analytical essays — not content summaries. A tutor with a Philosophy or Theology degree is significantly more effective at this level.
  • Comparing religious views systematically. Many RS exam questions require students to compare how different traditions answer a question (e.g., Christian vs Muslim views on euthanasia). A tutor who can build systematic comparison frameworks speeds up exam preparation.

How much does a Religious Studies tutor cost?

  • GCSE RS tutors: £28–£48 per hour
  • A-Level RS / Philosophy and Ethics tutors: £35–£60 per hour
  • Tutors with Philosophy or Theology degrees: £40–£70 per hour
