Sociology is one of the UK's most popular A-Level subjects — and consistently one where students underperform relative to expectations. The subject looks accessible but its mark schemes demand a specific combination of sociological theory application, statistical evidence, evaluation of competing perspectives, and structured analytical essay writing. A specialist tutor who knows the AQA mark scheme makes a significant difference to grades.
What does a Sociology tutor help with?
- Theoretical perspectives. Functionalism, Marxism, Feminism (Liberal, Radical, Marxist, Intersectional), Interactionism, Postmodernism, New Right. Applying the correct perspective with accurate sociological vocabulary is essential — students who describe social issues without framing them within sociological theory lose significant marks.
- Core topics. AQA A-Level Sociology covers Education, Families and Households, Crime and Deviance, Beliefs in Society (or Stratification and Differentiation), and Research Methods. Each topic has specific theories, sociologists and studies that must be known.
- Research Methods. One of the hardest components for students — understanding quantitative vs qualitative data, primary vs secondary sources, validity, reliability, representativeness, ethics, and evaluation of methodologies requires systematic teaching.
- Essay technique. AQA rewards structured essays that: state a theoretical claim, apply a named sociologist or study, evaluate with an opposing perspective, and conclude with an overall judgement. Many students describe but don't evaluate — a tutor who marks essays against the mark scheme closes this gap quickly.
Why do students underperform in Sociology?
Sociology looks like a subject you can pass by discussing social issues — it isn't. AQA rewards sociological theory application (naming theorists and perspectives accurately), use of empirical studies (Bowles and Gintis, Willis, Oakley, Cohen, Durkheim, Merton, Becker), and genuine evaluation. Students who write as if they're discussing topics in general terms rather than applying Sociology as a discipline score Grade 4–5 where their effort deserved Grade 6–8.
What to look for in a Sociology tutor
- AQA specification knowledge. AQA is the dominant A-Level Sociology board. Confirm the tutor knows your specific topics and the mark scheme conventions before booking.
- Ability to mark essays. Essay-marking against the mark scheme is the most valuable thing a Sociology tutor does. Ask whether they can do this.
- Coverage of Research Methods. Some tutors avoid this topic. Confirm they can teach it — it appears in all exam papers and contributes significantly to final marks.
How much does a Sociology tutor cost?
- A-Level Sociology tutors: £32–£58 per hour
- Tutors with Sociology, Social Policy or Social Science degrees: £38–£65 per hour
