How much does a GCSE French tutor cost?

GCSE French tutors in the UK typically charge between £25 and £45 per hour. French is one of the more accessible languages to find a tutor for, given the good supply of qualified MFL teachers and native speakers in the UK.

GCSE French assesses all four skills equally — listening (25%), speaking (25%), reading (25%) and writing (25%). Many students self-study for reading and writing but neglect speaking and listening, which together account for half the marks. A tutor who dedicates significant session time to oral practice provides disproportionate exam benefit.

For the speaking exam (which is assessed by your school teacher) specifically, mock speaking sessions with a tutor are among the most efficient exam investments a GCSE French student can make. The exam requires students to hold a 10–12 minute conversation — students who have only practised in class often freeze without real preparation.

Native French speakers may charge slightly more than non-native tutors with French degrees. Both can be excellent — the key is whether they know your specific exam board (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas or OCR). TutorLab tutors state their rates openly on their profiles.
