Online English tutor vs in-person: which is better?

English tutoring is one of the subjects most naturally suited to online delivery. Sessions consist primarily of reading, discussing and writing — all of which translate well to video call without any loss of quality.

Why online English tutoring works well:

  • Essay feedback can be delivered through shared documents — the tutor annotates directly in Google Docs or Word, making comments visible in real time
  • Reading comprehension and source analysis work naturally over video call with the shared text visible on screen
  • Access to English tutors who specialise in your exact exam board and set texts, regardless of geography
  • Typically cheaper than in-person due to no travel costs

When in-person English tutoring may be preferable:

  • Young children (KS2 primary) for whom physical presence and printed books are more engaging
  • Students preparing for the GCSE speaking and listening assessment who benefit from face-to-face oral practice
  • Families without reliable broadband or adequate devices

For GCSE and A-Level English, the vast majority of experienced tutors now offer online sessions and many work exclusively online. The quality is equivalent to in-person for the written and analytical components that make up most of the grade.
