How many tutoring sessions do I need for GCSE Physics?

GCSE Physics grade improvements are often faster than in other sciences because many of the marks are calculation-based and calculations are a practiseable skill — with the right guidance, students can improve significantly in a relatively small number of sessions.

As a rough guide:

  • Addressing specific calculation weaknesses: 4–8 sessions targeting the exact equation types causing problems
  • Moving from grade 4 to grade 6: 12–20 sessions from Year 10 or January of Year 11
  • Targeting grade 7–9: ongoing support through Year 10 and 11 — the unfamiliar application questions at the top grades require extensive past-paper practice

The most efficient Physics sessions are past-paper based. A good tutor works through exam questions, identifies the exact point where the student loses marks, and teaches the specific technique to address it. This is more effective than re-teaching whole topics from scratch.

For Combined Science students, alternating sessions between the three sciences with a single tutor is often the most cost-effective arrangement. Most GCSE Science tutors cover all three at a combined hourly rate.
