Browse all tutorsCommon Entrance tutoring prepares students aged 11–13 for the entrance examinations used by independent and private secondary schools in the UK. The CE exams are set by ISEB (Independent Schools Examinations Board) and cover English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, French and other subjects at CE 11+ or CE 13+ level.
Common Entrance is a different beast from state school tests — it uses its own syllabus, specific question formats and is often used by highly selective schools where the pass mark can be 65–75%. Without a tutor who knows the CE syllabus specifically, students often prepare for the wrong content.
Common Entrance is the entrance examination used by most UK independent secondary schools (typically sitting at age 11 for Year 7 entry, or 13 for Year 9 entry). It is set by ISEB and taken in the child's current school. The 11 Plus is used by selective state grammar schools and is a different exam. Some independent schools have their own entrance papers instead of CE. A tutor can clarify which exam applies to the schools your child is targeting.
For CE 13+ (Year 9 entry), most families begin tuition seriously in Year 7 or Year 8, around 12–18 months before the exam. For CE 11+ (Year 7 entry), preparation typically begins in Year 5 or Year 6. Schools often set their own pre-test assessments in Year 6 before the main CE exam — a tutor can help with both stages.
